Help with issues of overeating and being overweight.

Picture
As anyone who has been overweight knows, weight loss is no easy task.  There are thousands of diet programs and exercise regimens, shelves and shelves of books on the topic, extensive medical, psychological and sociological research and yet people continue to struggle and suffer around issues of weight and food.  There are many reasons to be motivated to lose weight ranging from serious health concerns to feeling embarrassed about one’s appearance.  Even with compelling reasons to lose weight, none of them may seem like enough to break through whatever it is that keeps us overeating and overweight.  We may feel like there is some powerful and mysterious force that works against us and against which we must battle to lose weight.  The battle ends here.

Here we begin with great compassion and understanding to explore both conscious and unconscious reasons you have for overeating and remaining overweight.  With that understanding, we can begin to imagine and to help you develop a new relationship with your body and with food.  As you lose weight, we can be curious about what may emerge.  Weight-loss can be exciting and extremely positive, but it can also bring up complex and unexpected feelings such as fear and grief.  It can be just these unexpected and unwelcome feelings that stall our process or lead us back to the old patterns.  Rather than a battle, this is a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance that can finally bring some peace into your relationship with food and your body.

I am a psychologist with over twenty years of clinical experience.  My doctoral research was on overeating and I have struggled with overeating and being overweight for most of my life.  I have also engaged in the transformative work which has changed my relationships with food and with my body and which continues to deepen my care and love for my body.  I know the courage it takes to embark on this path and am in a unique position to help you on your journey.
